Founders
Melvin Berman
Melvin James Berman was born on January 14th, 1915 and passed away on February 20th, 1996. Tenacious, brilliant and driven to the core, he founded and built Berman Enterprises from nothing. During his career, he and his brother developed several of the first major shopping centers in the United States and maintained lasting relationships with their tenants and vendors. Melvin sat on the board of the Rouse Company as well as Citizens bank. He led with strength and conviction and was a model of honesty and hard work.
Melvin lived with his wife Helene and their three children in Laurel, Maryland and in his later years in Palm Springs, California. He maintained an advisory role to Berman Enterprises until the day of his passing and enjoyed golf, philanthropy, and spending time with his family - in particular his twelve grandchildren. A steadfast supporter of the Jewish community, Melvin gave generously of his resources to support countless organizations including the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy which was rededicated in his name after his passing by his wife Helene and his son Dennis.
